What: Paul Elliman is a London-based artist and designer whose work explores the reciprocal impact of language and the urban environment. Known for his work with a found typography of objects and industrial debris, he also follows the human voice through many of its social and technological guises, often imitating other languages and sounds of the city.
Mr. Elliman’s work has been exhibited at London’s Tate Modern, New York’s New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Kunsthalle Basel, and is included in collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) and the Anyang Public Art Project (Korea). More recently he participated in the exhibition ‘Ecstatic Alphabets/Heaps of Language’, curated by Laura Hoptman at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2012. Mr. Elliman is also a thesis supervisor for Werkplaats Typografie, a graphic design program in Arnhem, the Netherlands. He is currently senior critic in graphic design at the Yale School of Art.
