Who: Galvanize Seattle
Where: Bellevue Library, 1111 110th Avenue Northeast, Bellevue, WA 98004
When: March 29, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
What: This event will feature a series of brief, engaging lightning talks with data scientists in the Seattle community with some modifications for the Bellevue community:
(1) the speaker must keep their presentation under 20 minutes, and
(2) the speaker must allow the audience to ask questions about their presentation for 15 minutes.
Here are this event’s talks and speakers:
1. Anomaly Detection in Images Using a Deep Neural Network and Isolation Forest
This app detects anomalous images within a collection using the Isolation Forest technique. The high-level features used to represent each image are derived from pretrained a convolution neural network.

Speaker Mark Wilber is a graduate of the Galvanize Data Science Immersive Program, specializing in model building, simulation, and algorithm development. Prior to that, Mark had 15 years of experience as a research physicist at UC Berkeley and U Washington, and more recently, in consulting roles in industry. Mark is now a data scientist with Root Metrics, based in Bellevue.

2. Algorithmic Investing using machine learning and P2P lending platforms
Peer-to-peer lending platforms — like Lending Club and Prosper — allow people to crowd-source funds for personal and business loans. Lending Club has publicly shared data on 750,000 loan applications and their performance. This leads to two interesting questions. First, can we use machine learning to create a model that predicts loan performance from an application with reasonable accuracy? More importantly, can we use this model in conjunction with Lending Club’s API to create an app that intelligently invests our money while we sleep?
Speaker Michael Hood moved to Seattle for the mountains, water, and chance to get involved in cool tech stuff. Michael is a former Navy pilot and a graduate of the first Galvanize Seattle Data Science Immersive. He is currently learning and working as a data scientist at ProKarma Consulting.
