Heard about Ransomware but not sure what it is? Want to learn how hackers buy and sell your information using a little-known part of the World Wide Web called the Dark Web? You’ll learn about these topics and much, much more at this Sept 14 2019 seminar.

The instructors for this seminar are subject matter experts in Cyberterrorism for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) programs. Both Steve and Mike have trained Department of Defense and Federal law enforcement personnel to protect some of the most aggressively targeted information systems in the world within our nation’s critical infrastructure. Students attending their Cyberterrorism courses include members of FEMA, NSA, DARPA, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, Unified Military Commands, FBI and the USSS. They have supported the Federal Bureau of Investigation on organized cybercrime matters, have dealt with ransomware on multiple occasions, and they perform forensic analysis of computing systems on a regular basis.

In the morning you’ll be learning about Cyber Crime, Cyber Criminals, and parts of the World Wide Web that few know exist called the Deep Web and the Dark Web.

In the afternoon, you’ll learn about digital forensics and how forensic analysis is conducted.  You’ll be taken through an actual case your instructors worked on where identity theft and credit card fraud was perpetrated.

This seminar is currently being offered through 2019 at no cost.  All are invited to participate, and you do not need to be a current student of EdCC. This seminar is popular and seats will go fast – we regularly have students who have traveled from out of state in attendance.

Additional Topics Will Include:

  • Data storage, hard drives and media

  • Recovering “deleted” data

  • Sources of data and evidence

  • Forensics in a networked environment

  • Computer forensics procedures – methods to start an analysis and investigation

  • Information security professionals – becoming one

  • Computer forensic professionals – becoming one

  • Locating and extracting evidence from the Windows Registry

  • Locating and extracting evidence related to Internet activity

  • Industry employment outlook

  • How experts prepare to testify in cases

Did you know that Edmonds Community College has a Cleanroom, with the capability to open and repair hard drives? We also have state of the art diagnostic equipment for our students to use – the same equipment used by the big data recovery firms and government crime labs.  Our students learn how to perform data recovery on damaged and malfunctioning hard drives as part of CIS 294 – Advanced Data Recovery.
