Seattle Channel Wins Best Government TV Station in Nation

The Seattle Channel has been named the best municipal television station in the nation. The station received the prestigious Excellence in Government Programming award from the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) at the group’s annual meeting held in New Orleans, La..

Additionally, the channel won 34 programming awards and honorable mentions for a variety of news, arts and community coverage and swept three categories: sports programming, ethnic experience and arts and entertainment.

“The Seattle Channel does a great job supporting Seattle’s values of public engagement and government transparency,” said Mayor Mike McGinn. “The station is committed to helping residents connect with their local government and their community through in-depth public affairs coverage, entertaining arts features and inspiring stories about our community. I congratulate them on their continued excellence.”

This is Seattle Channel’s fourth NATOA win in six years for station excellence. The station was recognized with the top government programming award in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Programs that won first -place awards include the weekly magazine show CityStream, the public-affairs program City Inside/Out with Brian Callanan and the documentary series Community Stories. “Seattleites can be proud to call the Seattle Channel the best public government channel in the country. The station continually demonstrates excellence in programming and tells inclusive stories that represent Seattle’s diverse culture and neighborhoods,” said City Councilmember Bruce Harrell, chair of the Public Safety, Civil Rights and Technology Committee. “These achievements are a reflection of the incredible staff at Seattle Channel who work hard every day to serve the residents of Seattle.”

NATOA honors excellence in broadcast, cable, multimedia and electronic programming produced by local government agencies. This year, NATOA received more than 650 entries submitted by local governments across the country and Canada.

“I’m proud of the Seattle Channel team and its commitment to inform, inspire and help build stronger communities,” said John Giamberso, the station’s general manager. “It’s truly an honor to receive this recognition from our peers in local government.”

Other recent Seattle Channel awards include three regional Emmy awards in 2012 and four Emmy awards each in 2011 and 2010.
