IAC Buys UrbanSpoon
Urbanspoon, the Seattle startup behind the popular restaurant recommendation application on the iPhone, has been acquired by Web giant IAC. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TechCrunch reported it was in the millions of dollars.
The startup founded bvy three ex-Josbter employees found its biggest success with an app that uses the iPhone’s GPS features and WiFi/cell tower triangulation to provide recommendations based on your exact location. It also uses the device’s Accelerometer to create a fun interface, with users shaking the iPhone to get their recommendations.
Last Month, UrbanSpoon said the app is on 4 million iPhones, and has provided recommendations for 200 million “shakes.” It’s also ranked 11th on Apple’s recent list of the most popular free apps. [24×7]
