A sold-out TEDx Seattle conference promises an enthralling meeting of impactful minds and eclectic topics this weekend. The best idea of all is joining in online. You can experience the day long event live on the Web via Livestream.
This Sunday, July 23, from 9am to 6pm PDT at http://new.livestream.com/tedx/TEDxSeattle plan to attend TEDx Seattle virtually. (Be sure and sign-up for a free Livestream account early so you can just click right in).
A bit of history: TEDx Seattle happened for the first and only time (until this year’s event) in 2010 when a group from the University of Washington decided they would apply for a license to host a TEDx event as a way to announce the launch of a Digital Media Communications study program. The event was held at The Pacific Science Center where as this years event will convene at the Seattle Children’s Theater. Sponsor’s include Starbuck’s, Bing, MOZ, Merriman and smartsheeet, among other in-kind and tech contributors.
The event theme for this year’s gathering is “Degrees of Impact.” According to co-curator Barrie Cohen, an event planner who has volunteered much of her time since Aoril of 2012 for this weekend’s programming, “We began by thinking about topics that we felt were impactful, not just to Seattlites, but to anyone who is interested in the ideas of the world. After 65 speaker applications and two auditions, the 18 speakers who will appear on stage this Sunday were chosen.” Almost all are from the greater Seattle area, with a couple of notable exceptions.
Speaker bios can be found on the TEDx Seattle Website along with links to each presenter’s favorite TED talk and the people, experiences and events that had the greatest impact on their lives. The TEDx Seattle curator in charge of speaker coaching is Marnie Weber. Rounding out the curator quartet are Kartik Rishi and Carly Slater.
The event will unfold in three different program segments, “Expand Possible,” “Be Authentic,” and “Reimagining Impact,” each segment narrated by three TEDx Seattle Emcees: Seattle radio personality Marty Riemer, former KIRO newscaster and social media producer Jenni Hogan and Daemon Arrindell, who runs the Seattle poetry Slam and is an educator at Seattle U.
“The main theses of TED is ‘Ideas Worth Spreading,'” explained Barrrie. “Speaker selections ultimately rested on the clarity of the message and the passion with which it was presented.” A TED talk is no more than 18 minutes. Definitely not a keynote, but a conveyance of ideas that make impact. Be sure to catch it online! [24×7]
