Talks
=====
1st talk
———-
Abstract:
Early warning and detection of drug allergies is a critical component to preventing harm to patients whose quality of life and safety are potentially compromised when receiving care. Acquiring allergy information is a routine practice in patient care yet poorly documented in electronic health record systems. This talk illustrates the use of Apache Beam to encode free-text clinical documentation with SNOMED medication codings. This may further serve as a resource for early warning detection systems and also more generally for organizations dealing with free-text unstructured data.

Speaker Bio:
Prior to joining Dito as a cloud developer, Damon Douglas practiced pharmacy in both retail and hospital settings. He currently develops data engineering and gRPC and REST API integration solutions using Google Cloud Dataflow and Google Kubernetes Engine. Outside of work he enjoys relaxing with family, watching movies, and playing with his cat.

2nd talk
———-
Abstract:
In this talk we will show how the Rust language can be used to write performant portable code and integrate that code into your Beam jobs.

Speaker Bio:
Sean has over 15 years of experience in Data and Analytics and over 25 years of experience in the industry. As a Strategic Cloud Engineer he supports Google’s largest customers get the most out of Cloud.

3rd talk
———-
Abstract:
Within Facebook thousands of Data Engineers, Data Scientists and Software Engineers rely on Dataswarm to perform daily batch data processing jobs. Over the last few years, the ecosystem grew significantly and is expected to grow at a higher speed. Dataswarm team faced a big challenge to scale the eco-system and overcame the challenges. This presentation will talk about the Dataswarm ecosystem, the actions the team took and the strategies it is taking to evolve the platform to support Facebook scale.

Speaker Bio:
Shawn Wang is a SWE at Facebook, he has been working in data warehouse org for 3.5 years there. Before joined Facebook, Shawn was working in Microsoft for 8 years on multiple areas including a big data analytics platform named Cosmos/SCOPE, complex event processing for IoT and security.

Kaushik Raj is an engineering leader who supports the Dataswarm team at Facebook in the data infrastructure org. Dataswarm is a mission critical, large-scale distributed platform that powers big data processing and analytics at Facebook. Prior to Facebook, Kaushik was an engineering manager at Amazon AWS, where he managed its invoicing and collection services.
