Breakfast Buzz: Social Venture Partners: A Story of a Growing Small Business, NWEN

When: Friday, November 16, 2012 7:45am to 9:30am

Where: The Hub Seattle, 220 – 2nd Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98104

What: Kick-start your Friday with this  monthly Breakfast Buzz! Wake up and smell the coffee: caffeinated conversation and continental nosh lead into to  interactive panels, inspiring keynotes, and as always, audience Q&A.

This weeks topic is: How Can and Why Would a Small Business want to take the time to integrate volunteerism, social responsibility, and philanthropy into their company?

People don’t often think of non-profits as “small businesses,” but that’s what they are. Social Venture Partners was started by an entrepreneur, Paul Brainerd, in 1998, in Seattle. It has since grown to 29 cities in 4 countries around the world, including the newest in Bangalore. We’ll address questions like – What has SVP learned about growing to scale? What does SVP think is important for young organizations to learn? And in its relationship with grantee organizations, SVP brings advisors with deep professional skills, patience and trust – unlike the relationship many entrepreneurs have with their investors. What have they learned about successful relationships between investors/small businesses? And anything else on your mind you’d like to talk with their Executive Connector, Paul Shoemaker, about!

Who: Speaking at the event is Paul Shoemaker, Social Venture Partner (SVP) Seattle’s Executive Connector.  Anyone who’s met him knows why.  If you’re out to change the world, he’s there to connect you to the people and organizations on that same journey.  (He’s also the boss, so he does a little executive directing as well.) Paul is committed to work in the community, serving on the boards of several organizations. He is the Founding President of Social Venture Partner International and currently sits on their board of directors, as well as the Board of the Microsoft Alumni Foundation and Partners for Our Children. Past work includes a recent term as Board Treasurer of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (2001-2007), Children’s Alliance in Seattle, (1996-2000) and Treepeople in Los Angeles (1987-1990). Paul was also recently named one of the “Top 50 Most Influential People in the Non-Profit Sector” by The NonProfit Times for the second year in a row. Read more.
