We will cover (hands-on) cloud computing terminology, creating a secure environment for your work, costing the cloud in advance, and granular cost management as you go. We will demonstrate the basic process of starting and configuring both virtual machines and cloud storage and will overview other key mechanisms that help you translate your research computing to the public cloud.

This event is co-sponsored by UW IT and the eScience Institute. UW IT is dedicated to building and supporting technology tools that enable UW students, faculty and staff to succeed. In related fashion the eScience Institute empowers researchers and students in all fields at UW by developing, promoting and teaching the complexities of data science. Both UW IT and the eScience Institute recognize the advent of the public cloud as a powerful new foundation for computation; one that promises to accelerate the pace of discovery and advancement in fundamental research. To make the case that the cloud is possible we periodically host events such as this one. The idea is to answer the question “How does migration to the cloud happen in actual practice?”
