Law & Politics Series: Washington State’s new Congressional District: A Progress Report – CityClub

July 28, 2011 @ 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm

Congressional and legislative district boundaries are redrawn every 10 years according to results of the U.S. Census. On December 21, 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that Washington will receive an additional Congressional district to reflect an increase in the state’s population.

The new district will take effect in 2012, giving Washington an additional House seat in the 113th Congress and an additional electoral college vote in the upcoming presidential election. The shape and location of the new district is yet to be determined. Those decisions will be made by an independent Redistricting Commission made of four members appointed by caucus leaders in the state House and Senate. Join us to hear directly from two Commission members on how their work is proceeding.

We’ll ask how they are ensuring an evenhanded approach, how they are gathering and taking citizen input into account, and what factors are most important to them as they work to make a decision that will have real and long lasting implications. Bring your own questions as we discuss this complex and consequential decision!
