Meeting with Kshama Sawant, Seattle Economics Council
When: Wednesday, October 08, 2014, 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Where: Wells Fargo Center, Suite 3200, 999 3rd Ave #3200, Seattle
What: In 2012, Kshama Sawant ran as a Socialist Alternative candidate for the Washington State Legislature and surprised everyone by winning 29% of the vote. The momentum continued in her campaign for Seattle City Council where she boldly ran on a platform of fighting for a $15/hr minimum wage, rent control and taxing the super-rich to fund mass transit and education. In November she defeated a 16-year incumbent Democrat to become the first socialist elected in a major US city in decades.
Immediately after being elected, she helped found 15 Now, which worked with socialists, organized labor, low-wage workers and the faith community to win a historic $15/hour minimum for Seattle.
Alongside being a teacher, Kshama is an activist, organizer, and socialist, and is a member of Socialist Alternative.
Join the Seattle Economics Council on Wednesday October 8 at the Wells Fargo Center on 3rd Ave for lunch and a presentation by Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant.
How Much: $17 for members, $25 for non-members
