This month’s showcase is curated by Sub Pop and features a main headliner and artists on the rise. Throughout the year, the showcase has visited different career-launching Seattle venues and introduced an exciting line-up of artists local to the Pacific Northwest.

ABOUT THE HEADLINER

Austra – Named for the Latvian goddess of light, Austra is an electronic band from Toronto, ON, Canada comprising Katie Stelmanis (principal songwriter), Maya Postepski, and Dorian Wolf. They débuted with the single “The Beat and the Pulse” (November 2010, One Big Silence), and their latest release is “Olympia” (June 2013, Domino).

Their debut album, “Feel It Break” (May 2011, Domino), came after a long sequence of bands for Stelmanis, representing a near 10 year musical progression performing as an artist, then fleshed-out by a full band. The album made it into several year-end critics’ lists; notably, both the Toronto Star and New York named it the best album of 2011, with the former calling it “an outright stunner.” Stereogum named Austra a “Band to Watch” on March 14, 2011.

Their sophomore album “Olympia” was released on June 18, 2013, from which the first single “Home” was released on March 7, 2013.

In 2014, the band released their first EP, “Habitat EP.”

More settled and dominant than ever, the band’s sound represents Stelmanis’ influences tightened into a shiny metal ball — pianos give way to keyboards as songs build and pull, their urgent, dark melodies through multiple synthesizers, wrapping themselves around Stelmanis’ voice.

LOCALS ONLY

USF – USF (formerly Universal Studios Florida) is an ongoing collaboration between longtime friends and Seattle natives Jason Baxter and Kyle Hargus. Since their inception in 2008, USF has recorded and released over six hours-worth of hypnotic, genre-bent music, including four EPs, the seminal debut full-length “Ocean Sunbirds,” a record inspired by the writing of Jonathan Lethem (2011’s “The Spray”), and a myriad of remixes for an eclectic mix of artists. Their latest works are the digital EPs “SIMISM” (2014) and “OASISM” (2015) for New York label Ceremony Recordings.

Gazebos – Self-proclaimed “whoa-pop,” Gazebos pack a powerful punch with their live performances, which singer Shannon Perry leads with infectious coos and yips. Their track “Ere Specka” features her voice mimicking the pop and crackle of the drums and guitar, creating a unique sound that’s sure to get stuck on repeat in your head. Perry, owner of Seattle’s Valentine’s Tattoo Co. and covered in a striking array of artwork herself, jumps around onstage, swirling her curly mane while shouting lyrics into the mic. Drummer Jordan T. Adams can’t keep a wide smile from his face as he rocks out—ever the classic party drummer. While bassist Shane Herrell and guitarist TV Coahran bop along onstage, ensuring the band’s energy translates to the crowd.
