Who: Steve Tapia, Senior Corporate Counsel, DIREC TV Sports Networks
Steve Tapia has practiced entertainment, media, sports and intellectual property law for 30 years. He is Senior Corporate Counsel for DIRECTV Sports Networks, a network of regional cable sports channels under the “ROOT SPORTS” brand that serves the Seattle Mariners, Big Sky Conference and other college and professional sports teams. He runs the Legal Group and is responsible for telecast production and rights deals, distribution agreements with cable providers, intellectual property protection and other aspects of ROOT SPORTS’ legal affairs.
He speaks frequently on the technology, entertainment and sports industries, copyright and trade secret law, open source software, online advertising issues, media law and first amendment issues. He has chaired the Media Law Resource Center’s “Digital Frontiers” conference at Stanford University Law School for the last 5 years and also been the keynote speaker at other conferences.
Previous to DIRECTV Steve worked for 15 years at Microsoft and before this was in-house counsel for HBO specializing in motion picture and television production. Steve received his B.A. from Yale University in 1977 and his J.D. from the University of Southern California Law School in 1983. He is also a professional musician.
