Position: Business Development Manager

What: Stoel Rives LLP is seeking a results-oriented Business Development Manager who will be instrumental in supporting the strategic objectives of assigned practice groups and industry groups (i.e. Initiatives) from the firm’s Seattle office. The Business Development Manager will create and execute marketing and business development plans and programs on behalf of select offices, practice groups, and initiatives. The Business Development Manager will specifically have oversight of the firm’s Seattle and Anchorage office marketing activities, as well as firmwide business development responsibility for the Litigation practice group, Benefits, Tax and Wealth Management practice group, Labor and Employment practice group, Terralex, China, and Food, Beverage & Hospitality Initiatives.
This position reports directly to the firm’s Director of Business Development and works closely with the Seattle and Anchorage Office Managing Partners and assigned practice group and initiative leads, as well as other team members on the Business Development and Marketing Communications team.
Candidates must possess superior written and oral communication and project management skills, and the ability to implement strategic directives and see projects through from concept to delivery, using initiative, solid judgment, and business savvy.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as front-line manager on incoming projects and function as project manager from conception to follow-thorough to ensure efficiency and quality.
• In collaboration with the firm’s CI/BI researcher and Practice Group Business Manager, research, analyze, and present information relevant to targeted groups of clients, identify issues, and recommend next steps.
• Play a key role in lateral integration of and support for assigned groups.
• Actively support cross-selling activities between practice groups and initiatives.
• Coach and prepare attorneys for presentations to clients for new business.
• Collaborate with the Marketing Communications Manager to identify and pursue profile-raising opportunities in key industry and business publications through media relations and advertising.
• Serve as project manager to the RFP process, from leading the go/no-go discussion to the post-opportunity debriefing, collaborating closely with the firm’s Business Writer and others.
• Develop targeted and highly customized qualifications documents, proposals, and presentations in the pursuit of new business for assigned practice groups and initiatives.
• Manage the organization of representative matters, client lists, and practice group and initiative experience for use in the Experience Database and specific business development efforts.
• Collaborate closely with the Events Supervisor to manage events and sponsorships including attendance focusing on client relationship building.
• Serve as project lead in the coordination of select peer review directories (e.g., Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, Best Law Firm/U.S. News).
• Serve as the “face” of the firm at Seattle business community events.
• Create, monitor, and track business development budgets relative to all areas of responsibility, assessing ROI from one year to next.
• Make recommendations regarding participation/membership in industry publications and organizations.
• Work with the Marketing Communications Manager and the in-house design team on the production of marketing materials for various events and campaigns.
• Identify awards and recognition opportunities and manage and coordinate nominations.
• Manage Coordinator and provide guidance on civic and charitable giving programs for the Seattle and Anchorage offices.
• Manage attorney community board involvement, including identifying opportunities and matching with the best skill-set for the organization.
Requirements:
• BS or BA degree required, preferably in marketing, business, or related fields.
• Minimum of six years of experience, preferably in a law firm and/or other professional services firm.
• Able to work long hours and travel.
• Self-starter, ambitious, and dedicated, with high levels of initiative and drive.
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and multitask, and complete simultaneous projects with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
• Able to work independently with good judgment as well as within cross-functional teams.
• Enthusiasm for and dedication to the legal marketing field.
• Active knowledge and curiosity of the law firm environment, including competition and trends.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and CRM systems, preferably InterAction.
