The Web Developer Intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist the IT department with maintaining the VisitSeattle WordPress site and in developing code quality tools.
Hours: 15-20 hours per week
Timeline: March/April — May/June (3-4 months)
Compensation: $17/hour plus ORCA card for duration
Scope of work:
Intern will be assigned a variety of projects, for example:
• Clean up media gallery
• Investigate plugin solutions for access control
• Normalize settings for search boxes/randomizer
• Make minor updates to website as needed
Learning objectives:
This position is open to a Junior, Senior or recent graduate interested in gaining real world experience as a web developer.
Required Skills:
Basic web development skills
-HTML, CSS, JavaScript (or other coding language)
Proficient with Windows OS
Internet technology + communication (email, social media, etc.)
Good written communication skills
Ability to self-motivate and work with limited supervision
Willingness to learn
Desired Skills:
Familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS
– Or basic understanding of web publishing
Familiarity with LAMP stack
– i.e. Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP
Basic understanding of software development patterns
– Familiarity with git or other version control system
– Comfortable with working on the command line
– Familiarity with some IDE / development application
Basic understanding of internet technologies
– DNS, HTTP (and other protocols), basic networking
An eye for web design and usability
